Big Data, Mechanical Turks, and the Excess of Textual Circulation

This paper questions the future developments of academic research in the Big Data age, both in terms of contents, corpus, methods and – most importantly – scope(s). In order to assess these potentials of latent excess, the author, formerly a coordinator of international multi-site educational programmes, revisits the circulation of esoteric knowledge in Ancient Greece and the sensational prerevolutionary interplays of the liberal and mechanical Arts in Europe.
